The Team

The Novelix leadership team has track records in all of the areas needed for the successful bench-to-bedside development of targeted therapeutics: identification and validation of high-value targets, preclinical and clinical drug development, trial design, biostatistics, oncology, dermatology, business development, corporate law, intellectual property law and finance. Team members have worked together closely on other ventures over the last 15 years and are intimately familiar with the company’s compounds, technologies and platforms. Novelix has also established a high-profile Scientific Advisory Board (SAB, please click for details) to help guide its aggressive development program.

Burkhard Jansen, M.D. – Director, President, CEO & Founder
Dr. Jansen, an international expert in skin and cancer drug development and a professor of dermatology and clinical pharmacology with FDA experience, played a leading role as the principal investigator who designed the successful early development of GenasenseTM in melanoma; the licensing of GenasenseTM  was one of the notable transactions in the history of biotech, exceeding $400 million. Prior to co-founding Novelix, Dr. Jansen was VP, Clinical Development, at Oncogenex, where he brought the company’s first lead compound OGX-011 into clinical trials and built a product pipeline in less than 2 years. Oncogenex entered into a $430 million partnering deal with Teva in December of 2009 based on the very encouraging data on OGX-011. Previously, Burkhard was the Head of Experimental Oncology and Molecular Pharmacology at the Medical University of Vienna.

Tim Triche, M.D., Ph.D. – Chairman & Founder
Dr. Triche is a seasoned executive who also has over 25 years of experience in cancer diagnosis and patient treatment. He is currently the Chief Pathologist at the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and Vice Chairman of the Department of Pathology, USC School of Medicine. Tim is a recognized expert in the analysis and use of cancer targets and pathways. He has served as a senior executive, in a number of medical companies, including Chairman and CEO of Oncormed.

Jeremy Teraoka, F.C.A. (UK) – Director, Chief Financial Officer & Founder
Mr. Teraoka has 25 years of experience with international companies. Most recently, he was a Director and CFO of MDX Medical, a publicly listed medical technology company in Canada. Previously, he co–founded Asia Equity, a stock brokerage which grew over a nine year period to 600 employees. Asia Equity was sold to Banque Paribas in 1998. Jeremy served as the Head of Operations - for Banque Paribas, Asia Equity; Far East Controller for Swiss Bank Corporation; and with Peat Marwick.

Richard Southard, J.D. – Director of Operations
Mr. Southard brings a diversity of legal and operating experiences with him. He worked in a  private equity firm specializing in new and emerging telecommunications and information technologies in the U.S., Latin America, Europe and India. His role evolved into operations, including two years as the managing director of a wireless telephone company in Venezuela. He most recently led the San Diego division of Motivational Systems, Inc. as Vice-President and Division Manager.

Diane Goostree – Business Development Consultant
Ms. Goostree has over 25 years of experience in business development, sales and marketing, operations, and general management including raising capital, obtaining FDA approval for products and medical devices, and taking a company public. Previously, as President and CEO, she led Artes Medical to its first approval for a dermal filler. She was Senior Vice President at SkinMedica and was actively involved in building the company through product and technology in-licensing, operations, marketing, and in raising $90 million in venture funding.

Poul Sorensen, M.D., Ph.D. – Chief Science Consultant & Founder
Dr. Sorensen has over 15 years experience in tumor biology and cancer drug target identification. He is Director of the Tumor Genetics Laboratory and a Professor of Pathology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and a Senior Scientist at the British Columbia Cancer Research Centre. Poul is the Chair of the Translational Research Committee of the Children’s Oncology Group, one of the world’s largest oncology networks. His expertise is in genetic alterations that occur in cancer and the evaluation and optimization of novel agents that influence these alterations.

Jonathan Buckley, M.D., Ph.D. – Development Consultant & Founder
Dr. Buckley has over 25 years experience in clinical trial design and biostatistics and is a Professor at the Keck School of Medicine and the Norris Cancer Center at USC. He has coordinated clinical trials for an international cancer network, and also developed Genetrix, a proprietary bioinformatics analysis system capable of identifying patient populations likely to benefit from a given targeted therapeutic. Dr. Buckley is not only a clinical development expert, he is an experienced business executive who founded and led Epicenter Software since 1984. Epicenter develops and markets software for the management and analysis of genetic data for drug development and patient selection.
